Interview Room 9 Page 2

  ****

I walked out, relieved to get out of the room, in honesty, it seemed the longer I stayed in there the harder it was to draw breath. It was as if his intensity somehow ground you down.

Outside in the corridor the air was clear, as if untainted by the man who had sat before me moments ago. I moved through the corridors and upstairs to the Inspector’s office. He was giving an audio update to the database with his door wide open. Seeing me coming he motioned for me to be quiet before closing off his report. “Officer Trent and myself will be returning now to continue the interview, Inspector Mayer signing off at 10:47pm.” Mayer then asked “Did you get anything?”

“Well only the name of his victim. He’s a loon alright and a scary one at that.”

Mayer snorted “Don’t sweat it, he was right about the finger prints, I’m running his DNA now.”

“I know, actually, he knew you were.”

  “Really?” asked Mayer.

We continued to talk as we headed back to the dingy interview rooms, to interview room 9.

We entered the featureless room again. Inspector Mayer took his seat and put down his fresh mug of coffee. I took my usual position standing back against the wall next to the door.

“Ok, no fingerprints. A stunt any kid can pull off with his dad’s file but I’ve got you figured John and soon we’ll have your last name.”

  “It’s Asgard.”

Mayer nearly choked on his coffee. “What...”

“My name is John Asgard, not that it matters.”

  “Why not?”

“Because...” The smartly dressed Norwegian was about to speak but paused, looking past my partner at the doorway. “You have a guest.”

Neither of us knew how he could have known that. No Audio upgrades or cybernetics were picked up in his scan and it was a bloody thick metal door.

Two identical taps indicated someone was outside and for one of us to come out.

“Get that Trent.” said Mayer. “We’re just getting warmed up here.”

I did as I was asked and stepped outside.
