“So Mr Asgard, from Aneby. You’re about to tell me why you’ve suddenly told me your last name?”

  “Because it doesn’t matter.”

“Stop all this bullshit!” boomed Mayer, as he wiped spittle from his chin with a napkin.

John smiled. “What time is it?”

“Two minutes past eleven.” said Mayer, red faced, looking at his own watch.

  “I think you’re a minute slow Inspector.”

“Really, why, you have to be somewhere?”

“At 11:10pm, I have to make a call to the rest of squad B and I am never late, never!”

Mayer’s response was cut short. The Inspector went to stand up just as the lights in the room blacked out. To the Inspector’s surprise he could see the suspect already standing as the lights failed. That's impossible, he's handcuffed to the chair which is bolted to the floor he thought.

I stood outside talking to Natasha, a girl from the reports team. She had come to give me some urgent info on who our suspect was. She was white as a sheet as she told me in a quivering voice that senior heads from New Scotland Yard were on their way to take him into armed custody. I’ll never forget the look on Natasha’s face.

“John Asgard is the code for a contract killer implicated in over one hundred and twenty hits. Last month this man wiped out a small thirteen man police station in Norway.”

“Shit, was it Aneby?” I asked.

“Yes, how did you know?” was all she said as the lights cut out.

She screamed so loud it echoed down the underground corridor. I began to fumble in the dark for the electronic door pad. It should have lit up, why hadn’t it I thought, my heart racing.

“Emergency lights!” I shouted to anyone who was listening. Why were the emergency lights not coming on. In the dark I panicked, fumbling at the door, eventually I felt the door come away from its frame and swing open.

Stunned, I looked on as the emergency lights flickered on for a second.

I could see Inspector Mayer laying face down on the floor, his head twisted to an unnatural angle.

I grabbed for the stunner on my belt and quickly drew the weapon. The light flickered off before I could fire it.

Natasha was screaming for her life now which added to the confusion. The lights flashed on again for a moment but the door in front of me was now almost closed. I pushed it open with my boot still aiming the stunner to get control of the situation, confident one shot would drop him.

“John, you have nowhere to go, come out!” I said trying to hide the fear in my voice. Quickly I thumbed the stud on my chest rig to send a warning out to any and all officers. “We know about Aneby, there is no need to repeat it here, we have forty officers stationed here.”

“39.” said a voice behind me causing my blood to run cold. Before I could turn around I was slammed into the wall and within an instant I heard the sound of my stunner go off. The electricity jolted through my body, dropping me, making me convulse instantly on the floor. I bit hard into the side of my mouth, forgetting all the training I had been given.

“The electricity in your Mark 4 stunner will short out your police radio, locater and anything else electronic on you Officer. I had two targets in England, now my work is done. My name is John Asgard, pray we never meet again.”

I couldn’t act, my muscles wouldn’t respond but I could see Natasha, quivering as she stepped in front of the immaculately dressed killer. “I can’t let you past...” she said, her voice quivering.

The man from interview room 9 turned to fix his icy blue eyes on me as I lay powerless on the floor.

“I said an opening for an Inspector would come Officer Trent. Inspector Mayers should have treated everyone with respect. He and someone else abused their position some time ago and I came here to put things right.”

...With that John Asgard walked past Natasha, a look from the Norwegian stole the courage from her... Somehow the man from interview room 9 walked out of the police station at 11.10 and vanished into the night, talking on a mobile phone.
